Confidentiality

All aspects of counselling are held in utmost confidence. Any information that will identify you as a person is not discussed with, nor is it disclosed to, outside parties without your written consent and this includes residence staff, professors, your friends, or your parents. In some cases, students will ask us to speak with parents, in which case we would be very happy to do so providing you provide us with your written permission.

We are, however, ethically and/or legally required to disclose confidential information to the appropriate authorities in cases where:

·        you indicate that you or another person may be in danger of self-harm, or in danger of harming themselves or others;

·        there is apparent, suspected or potential child abuse or neglect;

·        you report sexual abuse by a Regulated Health Care Professional;

·        the court issues a summons for records or testimony.

In any of the above circumstances, every effort will be made to inform you in advance before breaking confidentiality.
