Laurentian University has recently established a School of Mines that will include all of our existing mining-related degree/diploma/certificate programs, as well as several new programs. The aim is to establish LU as one of the top education and research providers in the world across the entire mining cycle from aboriginal consultation, grassroots exploration, and environmental assessment through mine planning/construction/development, occupational health and safety, and brownfields exploration to mine closure, environmental remediation, and environmental monitoring. A major focus will be on the development of additional post-degree professional programs. MERC is in the process of making plans to hire a Full-Time Administrative Director to expand our capacity in project development and project management. MERC is in the process of making plans for an Industrial Research Chair in Surficial Exploration Geochemistry to complement existing chairs in Mineral Exploration, Exploration Geophysics, and Precambrian Geology. The emphasis of the new chair will be on the development of exploration methods for base metals, gold, and diamond discovery in glaciated terrains.
