Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Sociology! Our vibrant programme attracts students from many different backgrounds and equips them for a wide range of future careers.
Students in our programme gain a firm foundation in both ‘classical’ and contemporary social theories. As well, they are exposed to a variety of research methodologies and techniques. Students interested in social justice issues will find strong support within our department.
The research interests of our faculty members include (but are not limited to): social and moral regulation; the social construction of race, class, gender and sexualities; the sociology of childhood, youth, and aging; sociology of the family; sociology of health; globalization and anti-colonial theory; food insecurity and food sovereignty; women and development; labour studies; state formation and state policy; the social organization of knowledge; sociology of the environment; and the sociology of education.
