International Education Week
November 15, 2011

Instrumental performances, song, rap, food and a new student-produced video marked the opening of International Education Week at Laurentian University.

International Education Week is being celebrated this year by more than 100 post-secondary institutions around the world, through a series of special events to raise the profile and highlight the value of international education.  The mission of International Education Week in this country is to raise awareness and understanding of the benefits of international education to Canada, to Canadian education and to the national economy.  It encompasses both international students studying in Canada and Canadian students pursuing studies abroad. The theme of the Canadian edition of IEW 2011 is “Canada: Gateway to the World.”

A record number of international students, more than 670, are currently studying at Laurentian.

“We are privileged to be the university of choice for hundreds of excellent students from China, from Saudi Arabia, and from many other regions of the world,” said Laurentian University President and Vice-Chancellor Dominic Giroux.  “We have seen our international enrolment surge in the past few years, thanks in part to a student-focused approach that encourages academic success and provides a strong and encouraging support network.”

Laurentian’s international enrolment has increased by 53% over the past two years.

“The increase in the numbers and the diversity that these international students bring has an energizing effect on campus life,” said Lise Lefebvre, Manager, International Student Services. “We hear from both students and faculty about the value of sharing new perspectives from outside Canada, and it seems that we become more mindful of the possibilities in the world, and the opportunities for positive change.”
