Laurentian Architecture

Laurentian University, one of the fastest growing universities in Canada in the past decade, is pleased to announce that it has received $21 million towards the construction of the Laurentian School of Architecture from the Ontario Government, as well as the undergraduate program approval which will make the School eligible for operating funding. The announcement was made by Rick Bartolucci, Sudbury MPP and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, at a news conference earlier today at Tom Davies Square.

“This is not only a great investment in Sudbury’s downtown but a tremendous investment in the future of the youth in our community,” said Bartolucci. “I met a young man today who told me of his dream to become an architect. Knowing that he will soon be able to pursue this goal within his community is thrilling. I am proud that the McGuinty government is continuing to invest in the North and excited to see the impact of these investments for years to come,” he concluded.

“This investment is a significant step towards realizing the School of Architecture,” said Floyd Laughren, Chair, Board of Governors of Laurentian University. “The School will be the first one to offer programs in French outside Quebec, and will enable Aboriginal and northern perspectives to be further reflected in sustainable design.”

Planning for the School of Architecture began in 2007 when members of the Greater Sudbury community and Laurentian University representatives recognized the economic development benefits and the opportunity to leverage regional expertise in creating a unique educational opportunity.

“From the beginning, the School of Architecture at Laurentian University has been conceptualized as a true reflection of the unique culture and environment of northern Ontario,” said Dominic Giroux, president of Laurentian University. “The school will assist in meeting the demand for highly skilled professionals in the coming decades. In turn the students will develop the expertise to help solve local and global design and urban issues,” adds Giroux. He said the proposed school should be launched in 2013 with a full enrolment of four hundred students anticipated by 2018.

“This announcement leads us one step closer to our goal of revitalization of the downtown core,” said Marianne Matichuk, mayor of the City of Greater Sudbury, which has already pledged $10 million towards the project. “Having the School of Architecture in Sudbury enables our community to continue to diversify and grow while creating new opportunities to ignite a culture of creativity and design in the region.”
