What is karate-do?
Karate-do literally means "the way of the empty hand" refering to a weaponless system of self defence. At Laurentian, traditional goals of physical and mental training are compatible with modern ideals of fitness, recreation and friendship.
Who can train at LU?
We believe everyone can try out this traditional form of self defense and martial art, and that different goals are well accommodated.
Is it safe?
Karate, when practiced correctly, is a very safe activity. One can expect a few bumps and bruises because it is, after all, karate but injuries at Laurentian are very few and far between. A sport insurance package is included as part of our risk management strategy.
How much does it cost to train?
A breakdown can be found here. The Karate Ontario membership is included in your fees. Belt examinations, should you choose to take one, are $25.00 which pays for your certificate and your belt.
Do I have to take a belt exam?
Belt exams (rank gradings) are optional. Ranks (white belt, yellow belt, orange belt, green belt, blue belt, brown belt, and black belt) are a great way to mark progress in the art.
When can I join?
Drop into any class. We look forward to meeting you. For the beginner, the best times to join are at the beginning of the terms - September and January.
Are there minimum age requirements?
Members must be at least 16 years of age. It is our intention that all participants feel as thought they fit into the social fabric of the club. This is, after all, a university club.
What is the language of instruction?
Classes are taught primarily in English. Japanese terms are used to describe karate techniques and translations are provided. Many members speak French so English - French support can be provided.
Can I leave class early if I have an academic class?
Yes... and you can arrive late. A student's first priority is academics. Just make sure that you inform Sensei that you are leaving - for safety sake.
Can I come to more than one class?
You can attend as many classes as you wish.
Do I have to come to all the classes?
You can attend as few classes as you wish. Just remember that improvement is achieved through regular practice.
What do I wear?
Traditionally, karate students wear a white karate gi. But track pants and a t-shirt are fine.
How do I get a white karate gi?
They are available at any martial arts supply store or can be purchased from the club.
Do I have to compete in tournaments?
No, competition is purely voluntary. But if competition is your thing, we offer great competitive training. The club is involved with accredited tournament circuits locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.
Is it ok if I am a beginner?
Yes. This club is a beginner's club. Most people have no martial arts experience when they first walk through the door.
I have training in another style/dojo and I am attending LU. Can I traing at this club?
Of course. We welcome your input.
